Predictive Acquisition Cost (PAC) Seminar from NCPDP 2012

The new drug price standard?

The pharmacy industry has long expressed dissatisfaction with the Average Wholesale Price (AWP) as the standard drug price type. And since its original publisher terminated distribution of AWP, the need for an alternative has become more urgent.

Independent tests showed that a new price type consistently tracked the actual drug acquisition cost far more effectively than AWP or any other existing price type. While a number of price types have been suggested as the new standard, including Wholesale Acquisition Cost (WAC), Maximum Allowable Cost (MAC) and the proposed survey-based National Average Drug Acquisition Cost (NADAC), none has satisfactorily met the criteria defined by industry leaders for an acceptable new drug price benchmark:

  • Transparency
  • Accessibility
  • Timeliness
  • Immunity to Manipulation
